Custom Cartography

Welcome to the Southwest Explorations website.

To begin your exploration just click on the map at left.

This site examines several early explorations of Arizona that took place in 1846-1860.  Excerpts from journals and diaries describe the Southwest in the words of these early travelers.   The pictures drawn by the expedition artists often help us to find their routes and campsites so I have employed rephotography to show to the modern appearance of the artist's scenes whenever possible.

Clicking on the map menu at left will take you to an expedition or an information page.  I've added a new section called "Notes & Papers" to the site.  Here you can find research notes, papers, and maps from myself and several other researchers.  The "Mapping" section describes some of my custom cartography projects

In designing this website I have opted for higher-quality graphics intended for broadband Internet connections.  The old Southwest Explorations website is still available for those with slower connections.

Thanks for visiting!

P.S. If you want to learn more about the pictures in the animated inset above they are in the following sections: Kearny (Saddle Mountain); Bartlett (Gila Canyon) and Sitgreaves (Leroux Island).
