Historiographic Cartography

(Illustrating history with maps)

In recent years I've begun to make maps for various projects that deal with Arizona history and geography.  Here are a few of those maps:

I created this map in 2006 for the El Morro National Monument to use for their centennial celebration.  It's a 16x20 full color map of Edward Fitzgerald Beale's 1857 wagon road from Albuquerque, New Mexico to the Fort Mojave, Arizona.

Here's the cover and map from a brochure on the "Historic Trails of Arizona," published in 2005 by the Arizona State Parks Department's Arizona State Committee on Trails.  I designed the map (with lots of input from other members of the Historic Trails Subcommittee of ASCOT).  This publication is available free from the Arizona State Parks Department.  You can view the entire brochure online at http://www.pr.state.az.us/partnerships/trails/historictrails.html
This shows the Spring 2005 issue of Canyon Legacy, the Journal of the Dan O'Laurie Museum of Moab.  This map was made for an article by Jim Byrkit titled Regarding the Roads Not Taken: The 1775 and 1776 Letters of Fr. Silvestre Velez de Escalante and Fr. Francisco Garces.
Here is the Spring, 2005 issue of Spanish Traces, published by the Old Spanish Trails Association. This is a color map for a longer version of Jim Byrkit's article on the Dominguez & Escalante Trail.
This is a map of Coronado's trail through Arizona that I did to illustrate another Jim Byrkit project in 2004.
